The Day's of Elijah

The time leading up to getting you, I spent a little time journaling my thoughts. I was so excited to meet you. My very first entry said talked about my experience learning who you were and that you would be coming to us. I talked about having told our parents you were coming and the worry that people had for us because of your complicated diagnoses and the expected outcome you were supposed to have. First of all, let me say that your life expectancy was WRONG!! You are thriving my boy! You are out riding bikes, bowling, and living your best life. I am so proud to call you mine! Yesterday I made the silly attempt to take you out in your stroller while I roller bladed. I haven't done that since like junior high, which was a long time ago. Luckily I didn't fall and you seemed to enjoy it. You love being outside and I love being able to take you out!  I have not done the best job keeping up with journaling about our time together and I want to do better for sure. The other day I s

Fast Forward

So I have definitely not been good about keeping up with this. I had hoped to be a lot better at this than I have been, that is for sure. So many things have happened since my last post. We are still battling kidney stones but are getting that fixed this coming Tuesday so an end is in sight. We now have guardianship of you buddy and that makes me so happy. I can now truly share you with the world and call you mine. Although the adoption can't happen until you have lived with us a fully year, we are one step closer. Your smile warms my heart!  You continue to amaze me every day. Since this picture was taken, which wasn't very long ago at all, you have been able to come off of your oxygen! You are able to maintain a good oxygen level on room air!!! We only have been using the oxygen at night with your BiPap. This is HUGE buddy! The sky is the limit for you my man. You have been learning and practicing to be able to control your own electric wheelchair. This could be a game chang

Stones and Anniversary's

Wow! What an interesting few days!  Thursday started off great! We had friends over to hang out and you were very interested in what they wanted to watch on TV. You did OT and tracked me with your eyes like crazy. You wouldn't turn your head unless I went to the other side. You fell asleep in the recliner and so I decided to make you more comfortable by putting you to bed. Thats when things changed. Within 5 minutes you started pouting and screaming. I did everything I could to try and make you feel better. I turned you, I got in the bed and held you, and nothing was working. I knew something was off but I wasn't sure what. I decided to load you up and take you to the ER. As we were driving, you were completely calm and didn't appear to be in any pain anymore. I started questioning if I should take you in because I didn't want to seem like that first time mom who took the baby to the ER because they sneezed. I sure am happy I did. Poor kiddo! You have kidney stones in

Changing Spaces

Oh how fun the last few days have been. The contractor wrapped up the remodel of the basement, which I have been waiting 5 years for. He was able to create a bedroom for you that is bigger than the one you had. Its also much cooler down here, so we are both sleeping better. You now have a walk/roll in shower that is so much easier to use. It took you a minute to get used to it but once you did, you seemed to relax. You also have your very own kitchenette and living room space, as well as a space to do all your therapies comfortably. Tomorrow the furniture from Ikea is supposed to be here, which gives me the chance to clean everything up and organize all of your supplies. The couches and recliner came today and even though they wont fit in the space the way that I had in mind, we were able to get them to work. Tomorrow you will also get a new TV for the living room space and I think I am probably more excited about it than you are. This space is so nice! I can't wait to see how muc

Leaps and Bounds

You impress me every single day! The other day we went to see your pulmonologist and the appointment went amazing! It's crazy to think that when you came to us in December, you were on hospice. Now, not only is hospice gone but everyone is so impressed with your progress. Pulmonology was so impressed that they agreed to start room air trials to see if we can get you off the oxygen altogether, as well as reach out to the palliative doctor to share her assessment of you. Yesterday during physical therapy, you impressed both of us during your "push-ups". You were showing off in full extension with your head turned to the right, and you decided to take it one step further and do it one handed! You are so amazing!!!  We have so much set up for you. I have you on the waiting list for the Trexo so that we can get you up and walking for the first time in your life! We are working on getting you into water therapy of some kind, even if I have to do it myself. The basement is almo

Things are getting real!

I have struggled lately with keeping up on this blog, which is sad because I wanted to try and keep all the memories I could of each day that I get to be your mom. I guess this was an unrealistic expectation but I hope to do a lot better. I have been doing a lot of research to make your life better and am finding so many things that I want for you. Your biological father has given us the green lot to make you our son officially by allowing us to adopt you. Ecstatic doesn't even begin to describe how this makes me feel. Its been very difficult trying to figure out how to make this dream a reality. I have called so many lawyers and agencies trying to get assistance with the process. It finally happened. We found an amazing lawyer that wants to help us make you legally our son. The next day, I took you to get your new glasses. Your reaction was absolutely priceless, making everyone present tear up. It felt so good to know that you can finally see the world! We were able to start cons

Highs and Lows

Yesterday was a great day with you! I took you, your bio dad, and bio uncle to the zoo. It was such a great experience! You got to feed the giraffes and they licked your hand. I joked that I should have put the lettuce up by your face to see if it would lick your face but I just couldn't actually do it. You sure did give me a workout. The zoo here requires us to climb a mountain and when you are in your chair, I have to push like 200lbs! It's crazy! My legs were burning but giving you this experience was worth it for sure. I kept trying to get the birds to come down from the trees with the stick of food but they just couldn't be persuaded. We had expensive zoo pizza and you seemed to like the sauce. It was a crazy day! It was a beautiful day when we got there and then when we came out of the pizza shop, it was getting really cold. We headed towards the penguins and it started snowing! The penguins were an interesting experience because of some shenanigans they were doing w
